It really depends on the charactes tbh. It's usually better to have some 4* and 3* combined, with some synergy and elemental variety here and there (as someone already said here), or one 5* and the rest either 4* or 3* (whatever fits), and use the Protagonist to fill the last spot since he/she's cost free. But as said before, it really depends on the characters you want to use.
Also there are some characters which don't really need to be 4* or 5* to be good, for example Mages with already strong abilities that don't scale on their 4* version (like curse, bind, etc). Another good example of this case, for a non-mage character, is Kotarou because his 5* only applies his LB3 excusively to his allies (according to the wiki) while the 3* version applies it to himself, which means that if you're planning to use him as damage dealer it would be better to just use his 3*.
